Getting started checklist

1. Overview

The Getting started with ITAM App card walks a new org from installation to its first asset transfer. It lists the steps in the order they are usually done, and each step tells you what to do, links to where it is done, and offers tools that speed it up.

You will find the card:

  • at the top of the Home page of the ITAM and ITAM Console apps, and
  • on the Settings page.

Only users with the Asset Admin permission set see the card. The admin who installs ITAM App gets Asset Admin automatically (see Installation & Set Up), so the checklist is there as soon as the installation finishes.

Every step also has a Documentation link to the page that explains it. Links to Setup and to the documentation open in a new browser tab, so you keep your place in the checklist. The counts refresh when a tool’s window closes.

3. Working through the checklist

  1. Click a step to open it. The first step that is still to do opens by itself.
  2. Do the step, using its links and tools.
  3. Press Completed. The step is ticked, the progress bar moves on, and the next step opens.

A step is completed only when you press Completed. The counts are there to help you judge whether a step is done; they never tick a step for you, because only you know whether, for example, every department your company needs is there. Press Undo on a completed step to open it again.

The steps can be completed in any order. A step that still has earlier steps to do shows a reminder such as Steps 1 and 2 are not completed yet, but you can still complete it. The optional App Launcher step is outside that order and does not count towards the progress bar.

When every required step is completed, the card says You’re all set. In the ITAM app it also offers Open ITAM Console.

4. Hiding the checklist

On the Home page, press Don’t show again and confirm to remove the card from the Home page. The card stays on the Settings page, where Show on Home page again brings it back.

5. Notes and limitations

  • The checklist is shared by the whole org. A step one Asset Admin completes is completed for every Asset Admin, and Don’t show again hides the card from everyone’s Home page.
  • Why the App Launcher step is manual. Salesforce does not let an installed app change the order of the App Launcher, so ITAM App cannot put itself first. The step points you to Setup → App Menu, where an administrator can drag ITAM Console to the top for the whole org. To open ITAM Console right after login, set it as the default app of a profile in the profile’s Assigned Apps.
  • The progress is kept as a Config Item record of type Onboarding checklist. Deleting that record resets the checklist.
